Costa Rica

The biodiversity of Costa Rica makes it a perfect nature photography destination. On this safari, I use every extreme lens I own: 8-15mm wide angle, 100mm macro, and a 600mm telephoto lens often with a 2X teleconverter for 1200mm.

From coastal beaches and estuaries, to mighty rain forests, and the Talamanka Mountains that reach over 12,000 feet of altitude!

Our first stop in on the Caribbean coast where old logging canals are now home to tiger herons, egrets, green Macaws, owls, parakeets, limpkins, Wattled Jacana, and more. They share this habitat with numerous reptile species such as spectacled caiman, Cuban anoles, and the iconic Basilisk lizard, colloquially called the “Jesus Christ lizard” because of its ability to run on top of the water.

The highlight of the Caribbean coast is the hatching of green sea turtle nests.  At this event you will learn to use all of your lenses to capture different views and angles as the baby turtles sprint across the beach to their new ocean home.

The Costa Rican rainforest is home to myriad species of reptiles, birds, and mammals. The highlights include two and three-toed sloths, woodpeckers, toucans, mot-mots, eyelash pit vipers, boas, leafcutter ants, moths, and butterflies. Peccaries wonder through, as aguti scoot among the trees. The trees themselves are worth the hike!!

Night walks are the perfect place to perfect your macro photography skills. The frogs, snakes, mantis, and a variety of beetles are simply gorgeous.

The cloud forests of the Talamanca Mountains are home to many species of hummingbird, silky flycatcher, tanagers, euphonia, and the effervescent resplendent quetzal. You will find every moment is stuffed with colorful action to photograph!
